Effective June 29, 2020, Prince George's County has declared that houses of worship can open for gatherings not to exceed 50 percent capacity. We have calculated that, with the required social distancing, we can seat 60 people in the main church and 75 people in the auditorium.
So starting Sunday, June 21st, the regular Mass schedule resumes with the following amendations:
Tuesday- Friday 9 am, in the chapel unless attendance exceeds appropriately distanced capacity, in which case we will consider moving daily Mass to the church.
Saturday 4:30 pm anticipated Sunday Mass according to the Roman Missal, in the church
Sunday 8 am Mass according to the Roman Missal, in the church
Sunday 9:30 am Mass according to the Roman Missal, in the auditorium
Sunday 11 am Mass according to the Divine Worship Missal. two simultaneous Masses--one in the church [maximum capacity 60 persons] and one in the auditorium [maximum capacity 75 persons].
N.B. Fr. Bonaventure Chapman, O.P. will be assisting us here for a while, helping us meet the new challenges of our parishes. Please welcome him when you see him.
Adults should be wearing face coverings and should sanitize their hands upon entering the church.
We ask that all parishioners attending Mass in the church follow the instructions of the ushers and sit only in cushioned pews, maintaining appropriate social distance between family groups.
The seats in the auditorium have been arranged to accommodate singles, couples, and family groups. Please sit in a seat grouping according to the number of persons in your party. We ask that you not rearrange the chairs. If you cannot find a grouping to match your family, ask an usher for assistance.
FAQ
What safety precautions are we taking?
People must wear masks.
People should clean their hands as they come into the church. It would be helpful if people brought their own hand cleaner.
There will be no booklets, all music and Mass aids will be printed out and are to be taken home after each use.
Ushers will guide people to their seats to make sure that distancing is maintained. While pews are marked, there may have to be adjustments based on groupings of people who live together or have continuous contact with each other.
Also, ushers will need to guide people to communion to make sure that distancing is maintained there also.
Surfaces will be cleaned between Masses.
What if it would be unsafe for me to come to church, due to my age or compromised health situation?
Parishioners of both St. Ignatius and of St. Luke's continue to be dispensed from their Mass obligation.
The Archdiocese of Washington:
The dispensation issued by Archbishop Gregory from the obligation to attend Mass during this time remains in effect. All persons who are subjects of the Archbishop of Washington no matter where they may be, and all other persons who are actually present in the Archdiocese of Washington who are under the obligation, are dispensed from the obligation until further notice (cann. 87 §1, 91).
The Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint Peter:
• The Bishop’s commutation of the obligation to attend Sunday Mass is continued indefinitely. Elderly and vulnerable parishioners are encouraged to remain home until the threat of the virus is eliminated.
• This also means that, even though Mass is public again, the obligation is still commuted. Families should exercise prudence in deciding when to join public gatherings again.
What if I am anxious about going out?
The general dispensations noted above apply for all in both the Archdiocese of Washington and in the Ordinariate.
If you do not feel that you can return to attendance at Mass at this time, but would like to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and/or the Eucharist, please call Fr. Vidal to schedule a pastoral visit.
Will there be coffee hour?
We are sorry to say, no. We hope that the situation will improve soon, and that we can return to all our accustomed parish activities and gatherings. Please pray for that day.
